~ The Neighborhood ~

Whatever the reason for visiting Chicago, The Hansen House Mansion offers an ideal starting point for exploring the city. We are in downtown Chicago's Lincoln Park, on a quiet street of 19th century homes designed in the 1880s by Harald Hansen. It's a terrific (and safe!) area with fine shops, cafes, restaurants, theatres, movies, museums, art galleries, Second City, comedy clubs, Lincoln Park, the free city zoo and botanical gardens, the lake/North Ave beach, day spas, bi-weekly organic farmers' markets, a full-sized gourmet grocery, and for any jetlag a 24-hour pharmacy, a 24-hour restaurant, a 24-hour health club with indoor pool, and a 24-hour Starbucks are ALL within 1/2 to 2 blocks!

Groceries and Other Needs
Treasure Island, an upscale full-sized grocery, is a few doors down the street and Whole Foods, a mega-sized department store of health foods, is six blocks west. There's a small convenience store steps from our door, or Walgreen's (a major 24-hour pharmacy) is one block away. And you can walk one block south to find a 24-hour Starbucks!

Entertainment
It's just one block to the famous Second City, two movie theater complexes, many restaurants, fascinating shops, cafes and bars. Walk a few blocks more to encounter many more live theaters, music venues, comedy clubs and museums.

24/7
In case you have jet-lag when you arrive in Chicago, or just like to go 24/7, feel free to explore the neighborhood at any hour -- we are two blocks or less to a 24-hour pharmacy, 24-hour restaurant, 24-hour health club (single visits are $20) and Chicago's only 24-hour Starbucks.

Shopping
It's a leisurely walk one mile south to vibrant Michigan Avenue's upscale department stores, or just explore the surrounding streets with their eclectic shops of locally-designed clothing and home accessories. Walk or take the bus one mile west to a collection of more familiar stores -- Express, Gap, J Crew, Banana Republic, Victoria's Secret for yourself and Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel and Expo for your home.

Activities
Lake Michigan is right across the park for swimming, sailing, boating, etc. The country's only free major zoo is a few blocks further, as is the Conservatory and the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum.
